Day 4 - Misc

Tim Hawkins!  So far, we haven't used the DVD player much in the car, but tonight, the kids are watching Tim Hawkins in the back.  We have a 10' AV cable so that the sound goes through the main vehicle speakers,.. So Ken and I are enjoying the audio as well and it doesn't have that tinny sound from the dvd player speaker.

Abby made a few USB sticks of music and audios: Diana Waring, Jonathan Park, Your Story Hour, and Jungle Jammin Friends The Radio show are favorites of ours.  Ken also got the CB set up so the kids can learn about "life before cell phones".

I am using a 2016 large print Rand McNally Road Atlas to keep us on track, every part of our route is highlighted and the pages are tabbed in the order we will need them.  On Day 4, we are on tab 8 of 25.

We are also using this wonderful book:

This book is the 2016 Next Exit.  It has been a great resource on the interstate for finding gas, rest stops, food, and rv parks.  The items listed are within 1mi of the exit and items marked in red are "easy access" for RVs.

We decided not to make any reservations in advance, but instead, to work from an undated itinerary of places to see based on lists from each of the children.  They each came up with a prioritized list of 3-5 places they wanted to go then I compiled those lists and came up with our plan.  I used Furkot.com and Roadtrippers.com (and app) to take our list and put it in order, then Abby and I transfered that plan to the Road Atlas.  For each venue we plan to visit, we put the address and phone number on a blue notebook sized post-it to help us get to our place of interest.  Similarly, we have phone numbers on the same blue post-its for friends and family we may be able to see aling the way.  We are using the GPS to navigate within cities and towns where the road atlas does not provide enough detail.

Once we get to NM, we will be using another book which details major mountain passes and information on safely navigating the Rockies as well as a variety of "Scenic Drives" guides for various western states.
